During my internship with the Tampa Bay Times, I’ve been designing web layouts for stories, analyzing data about Florida’s senate districts, and creating engaging content for the Times’ website.
Keep a lookout for updates on this page as my projects post.
The Tampa Bay Times has been on a path to redesign its site using the CMS used by the Washington Post, called Arc. I’ve been part of the team testing, developing and designing features for the Times website. Specifically, I built and oversaw the Times photo blog redesign with another designer.
Created the static and interactive graphics for the entire series of In Harm’s Way, a look at children’s accidental gun deaths, which won Best Investigative Reporting of 2017 from Longreads.
Worked with another developer to storyboard and create this story’s opening graphic. This story went on to be one of Trace’s Must-Read Gun Violence Reporting of 2017, along with In Harm’s Way
Democrats could have won back Florida’s Senate on Tuesday. But we already know they won’t.
Analyzed voter registration data, created D3.js graphics and contributed reporting for this interactive on the Florida Senate.
In the week after the general election, I made this tool so that reporters could include tables in their stories. The program uses the JavaScript library Miso to read and interpret Google Spreadsheets.
Created the web layouts for these stories.

Anything for Tyler: One Florida family risked everything to treat their son with medical marijuana
Designed and created the web layout to this story about a family with a dying son. Modified existing templates in The Times’ ledeTwo story building tool.
For The Times’ annual catalog of local election races, I was approached to make a landing page and also create an easier way to layout the web pages. Often the web team would have to copy and paste individual sections from the print layout to the web page.
With the data team, I created a python scraper that would take the candidate’s entries and rewrite them into a new template. The tool can be used in upcoming elections and will save the web team a lot of time during election season.
Macrobakery for the Tampa Bay Times
My first week at the paper, I was shown the Macrobakery that the web team used to embed pictures, links and headlines into online stories. I thought the original design of the tool was complicated and confusing for reporters who didn’t understand HTML. I offered to improve it and worked on it during my free time around the internship.
Now the new Macrobakery is used by the entire web team at the Tampa Bay Times and has caught on among reporters and editors who now feel able to understand the embed process.
Did DUI arrests in Tampa plummet when Uber came to town?
Created a D3 line graph made to accompany a Poltifact check about Uber in Tampa.
